My new writing routine was devised after reading mind management, not time management
I recently wrote an article on my key takeaways and lessons from Mind Management, not Time Management, by David Kadavy, which I have linked to.
One of the big takeaways was to batch similar tasks and match them when you are in the right mood for them, which will improve efficiency and the quality of your creative output.
What changes did I make to my routine?
I didn’t really have a set writing routine other than trying to write every day and having a system to track my content creation process, and in its way, it served me well. But it seems to lack the ability to scale.
In my bullet journal, I devised my creative week schedule for my creative work, and this is what I came up with currently. My writing is a side project due to my full-time job.
But I also considered what my schedule might look like if I was ever fortunate enough to be able to become a full time writer.
As you can see, there isn’t much difference except for the fact that most of the weekend would be considered rest days other than a short period of planning on Sunday. That is due to the importance of res in the creative process.
I also schedule specific writing periods. The idea is that I would write a blog post over two or three sessions to allow fresh insights from my work to brew.
How my changes have worked
Overall, I’m pleased when I go. I currently use Sunsama to manage my daily schedule. I have linked to an article on my current productivity and knowledge management system, which gives good insight into how my content schedule fits in.
My only real problem is that, at times, I have to try and finish an article in one sitting to make sure I’m able to publish it on time. But this is because my writing is a side hustle and is just one aspect of my life, even if it is an important aspect.
If you are a creator, how do you schedule time in for your work?
